April Masini: Accomplishments

  • Credited by the former Governor of Hawaii with almost single-handedly increasing the state’s television and film production by 200% in five years.
  • Created/executed 9 back-to-back, uniquely themed world-class events, including Hawaii’s largest weekday parade (to-date), that cemented the second week of May 1998 (according to each the print, radio and television media) as “the biggest week of back to back events in Hawaii’s history.
  • Initiated and closed the first-of-it’s-kind, multimillion-dollar private sector/studio/State of Hawaii, film financing deal with Universal Studios/Blue Crush through the utilization of newly drafted legislation.
    • Gained commendations for leveraging the Universal Studios/Blue Crush transaction to pioneer the first-of-its-kind, interagency cross-promotion between a studio and the location in which a film had been shot.
  • Secured/Co-chaired/Coordinated and Produced (for Hawaii) the 1998 Miss Universe Pageant, delivering tens of millions in marketing, advertising and promotional exposure, across 85 countries, valued in excess of $53 million, from a $3 million investment.
    • Savvy, inspirational and motivational leadership ability resulted in training, managing, directing success. nearly 700 volunteers to work for a contiguous four-month period ensuring pageant’s notable
    • Miss Universe Corporation owner, Donald Trump, continues to refer to the 1998 Hawaii Miss Universe pageant as establishing the bar, and setting standards, against which all future pageants would be measured.
  • Pioneered, developed and implemented “Share Aloha with the World,” the largest and most successful statewide contest in the history of Hawaii, with 2,877 submissions.
    • Contest essays and illustrations continue to be displayed today, throughout Honolulu International Airport and each of the neighbor island airports, after 5 years.
  • Employed exemplary leadership, tenacity and persuasive ability, under high pressure, to obtain relocation of Baywatch production series from CA to HI -- after contract to relocate to Australia had been inked.
    • Gained 125 jobs for Hawaii residents, delivered marketing/advertising exposure utilizing/incorporating every media medium simultaneously, valued in excess of $66.6 million on a $2.7 million investment, while generating $45 million in state revenue -- 25 times the state’s investment.
  • Demonstrated visionary leadership initiating, packaging and closing transactions utilizing each newly enacted piece of TV and film production legislation:
    • Usage of SB1958 as demonstrated with the 1998 "Miss Universe Pageant."
    • "Baywatch" set the standard for utilizing HB2960 in conjunction with SB1958.
    • Blue Crush” from Imagine Entertainment (Ron Howard/Brian Grazer) and Universal Studios, was the first production to utilize Act 221.
